One Perfect Summer by Paige Toon
‘Do you still love him?’ Every second of every minute of every hour of every day…Alice is18 and about to start university while Joe’s life is seemingly going nowhere. A Dorset summer, a chance meeting, and the two of them fall into step as if they have known each other forever. But their idyll is shattered, suddenly, unexpectedly. Alice heads off to Cambridge and slowly picks up the pieces of her broken heart. Joe is gone; she cannot find him. When she catches the attention of Lukas – gorgeous, gifted, rich boy Lukas – she is carried along by his charm, swept up in his ambitious plans for a future together. Then Joe is there, once more, but out of reach in a way that Alice could never have imagined. Life has moved on, the divide between them is now so great. Surely it is far too late to relive those perfect summer days of long ago?
I have always been an avid reader of Paige Toon’s books ever since Lucy in the Sky hit the shelves.
The one thing that I really enjoy is that you can often find a character crossed over from Paige Toon’s earlier books and I was pleased to see that the tradition was carried over in this book. I won’t tell you who it is, because it is always fun looking out for them.
This book follows teenage soul mates after they share that one perfect summer together and are dramatically torn apart.
The whole book had me gripped, and I found myself on a roller coaster of emotions with Alice. You experience the heart wrenching, gasping for breathe love she has for Joe, the fear she has of Joe’s brother Ryan and his parents and the torn emotions she feels when she meets Lukas.
Alice and Joe are instantly likable characters and I found that it was only really Joe’s family that I disliked in this book, at times I felt sorry for Lukas, it must be hard always being compared to such an overwhelming tale of a first love.
I won’t go as far as saying that I started to route for Lukas because it is obvious that for Alice there will only ever be Joe who she will love with that intensity.
I won’t ruin the ending for you, but as with all of Paige Toon’s books you always want to carry on reading and long for more; so its great to announce that Paige Toon confirmed on Facebook that there will be a sequel to One Perfect Summer.
I for one can’t wait to find out what will happen to Alice, Joe and Lukas
