Bones & All by Camille DeAngelis

Bones & All by Camille DeAngelis

Maren longs to be someone people admire and respect. She wants to be loved. But her secret, shameful needs have forced her into exile. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it’s done to her family and her sense of identity; for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her–how they judge her. She didn’t choose to be this way.

Because Maren Yearly doesn’t just break hearts, she devours them. Ever since her mother found Penny Wilson’s eardrum in her mouth when Maren was just two years old, she knew life would never be normal for either of them. Love may come in many shapes and sizes, but for Maren, it always ends the same-with her hiding the evidence and her mother packing up the car.

When I started reading Bones & All I didn’t really know what to expect,  I found myself tempted by the eye catching cover and before I knew it, I was pulled within the pages of what turned out to be a surreal read.

The story follows 16 year old Maren Yearly, who finds herself alone after her mother abandons her one night, left in search of a place to live, Maren is faced with many challenges, her biggest being the urge to eat anyone who gets close!

Let’s be honest, yes this story is at times warped and horrifying but it is worth reading, the characters are brilliantly written and despite the fact that Maren and Lee have cannibalistic tendencies, they both are sensitive and intent on leading a normal life.

It was strange to like characters who could inflict so much pain on others but DeAngelis has allowed the reader to really see her characters and the turmoil they experience.

Bones & All is a tale of romance, self discovery and coming of age.

My only critisim is that I felt like the acknowledgments over explained the story, which left me feeling a little deflated!
