They say that the sense of smell is closely linked with the memory, probably more so than any of our other senses, it is also an emotive sense which means that a scent or fragrance can transport you to a memory or an emotion that you had at that time. They refer to this as an Olfactory memory.
I’ve always had a heightened sense of smell and linked fragrances to people, I once was in hospital and couldn’t open my eyes but I knew that my mum was there from the smell of her perfume.
But this year more than ever I have found a comfort in fragrances that I never had before.
Since my dad passed away I find myself missing everything about him from his voice to his smell. My dad had several fragrances that were what we would call his scents.
As I grew up I learned the names of his favourite aftershaves and once I was earning I would enjoy buying them for him. I would buy him the fragrances that I knew he loved, the ones that smelt to me like my dad.
Now on days when I miss him to the point that my heart hurts, I take out one of his aftershaves and I spray it around the house or on to my clothing if I am going out. I find it comforting to have the smell that I grew up with around me, to remind me that my dad’s essence is still very much with myself and my family.
I know that my mum also takes comfort from my dad’s aftershaves and I am sure that we aren’t the only ones in the world who cherish the fragrances of their loved ones lost.
