International Women’s Day

As women around the world celebrate International women’s day, I want to tell you about the woman I will be celebrating today.

My mum

From an early age, I have idolised my mum and the strength that she shows in everything that she does. But this 12 months I have witnessed my mum care for my dad in his last days and help us all with our grief after his passing. I watched her make sure that my dad’s last wishes were carried out. From the day of diagnosis to his last breath she was there forever by his side.

Last year I remember my dad telling the nurse from Marie Curie that when he met my mum he realised what a formidable woman she was. I know he would be proud to know that that character trait is still very much a part of her even as she grieves.

In fact, they made a formidable duo my parents and both raised me to understand the importance of women’s rights and equality. I was told how important it was to use my vote and make sure that my voice was heard. I was taught to fight for equal pay and not settle for less than I deserve.

That is why on this day it seems only fitting to honour the woman who raised me to understand the importance of women’s rights. The woman who has shown me that strength and determination are traits to encourage and be proud of.

Thank you, mum!

Happy International Women’s Day to women everywhere. May this year give you the courage to follow your dreams and the strength to never give up!
